Description

Ferrosilicomanganese is composed of manganese, silicon, and small amounts of other elements. It typically contains 60–65% manganese, 14–16% silicon, and 2% or less carbon. This ferroalloy is used in the foundry industry in two main grades:

  1. Ferrosilicomanganese Grade 14/60
  2. Ferrosilicomanganese Grade 15/65

Since both silicon and manganese have a high affinity for oxygen, they effectively prevent oxidation during steelmaking. As a result, the produced steel is cleaner, more cost-effective, and free from impurities, which significantly increases the mechanical properties of the steel, including strength and toughness. On the other hand, the manganese in this ferroalloy reacts with sulfur and prevents the formation of iron sulfides, which are harmful intermetallic compounds that melt during hot rolling and cause surface cracks, brittleness, and reduced mechanical properties.

Applications of Ferrosilicomanganese:

  • Deoxidation and alloying in steel components
  • Reduction of brittleness and impurities such as sulfur, phosphorus, and nitrogen
  • Improved strength, hardness, workability and impact resistance
