Description
Ferrosilicon is an alloy composed of iron, silicon, and several other elements. Depending on its application and in accordance with common standards in Iran’s foundry industry, it typically contains 70–75% silicon.
This ferroalloy is available in three size ranges:
- Ferrosilicon 0–3 mm
- Ferrosilicon 3–10 mm
- Ferrosilicon 10–60 mm
The main impurity in ferrosilicon is aluminum, which is permitted up to 2% based on Iranian industrial standards. However, the lower the aluminum content, the higher the quality of the material. It is important to note that as the particle size of ferrosilicon decreases, the silicon content in cast parts tends to decrease, while the aluminum content tends to increase.
Applications of Ferrosilicon:
- In steelmaking industries, for deoxidation, improving strength, hardness, and magnetic properties
- Graphite nucleation agent, grain refinement and metal structure in gray and ductile irons
- As a main additive in the production of ferrosilicon magnesium, used in ductile iron casting
- In the production of graphite electrodes for welding
