Ferrosilicon magnesium (FeSiMg) is used primarily for the production of ductile cast iron with spheroidal graphite. FeSiMg is added to the ladle prior to pouring the molten metal, so that the magnesium content is absorbed by graphite nuclei during solidification. This changes the surface tension of graphite, allowing it to grow uniformly in all directions, thereby transforming its shape from flake to spherical.
